Celebrate International Women’s Day

Every year on March 8th, people around the world celebrate International Women’s Day — a day to honor the achievements of women and advocate for a more equal future. According to the United Nations, the theme for this year is “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.”

International Women’s Day is more than a celebration. It is also a moment to pause and reflect on the resilience, strength, and well-being of women everywhere.

Women wear many hats throughout their lives — leaders, caregivers, mothers, partners, professionals, friends, and warriors in our own right. Women are capable of incredible things, often juggling responsibilities and challenges with determination and grace.

Yet amidst advocating for others and supporting those around us, it’s important to remember something essential:

We must also care for ourselves.

Honoring Our Health: A Foundation of Strength

Women’s health is complex and deeply interconnected. True wellness includes physical, mental, and emotional balance.

Taking care of our bodies is more than maintenance — it’s an act of empowerment.

Movement, nourishing foods, restorative sleep, and stress management are not luxuries. They are essential foundations for a healthy life.

But wellness also requires listening to our bodies when something feels out of balance. Chronic stress, fatigue, hormonal shifts, emotional burdens, and environmental pressures can all impact health over time.

Women often spend so much time caring for others — family, friends, coworkers, and communities — that they neglect their own needs.

Yet the truth is simple:

To care for others well, we must first care for ourselves.

This is where holistic medicine can play a powerful role.

The Importance of Self-Care: A Radical Act of Self-Love

Modern culture often praises women for selflessness and sacrifice. While generosity and compassion are beautiful qualities, constantly putting ourselves last can eventually take a toll.

Self-care is not selfish. It is essential.

Setting healthy boundaries, making time for rest, enjoying small moments of joy, and tending to our health are powerful ways to reclaim balance and vitality.

One therapy that beautifully supports this process is Acupuncture.

Acupuncture encourages the body to slow down and reset. During treatment, many people experience a deep sense of relaxation as the nervous system shifts out of stress mode.

Over time, acupuncture can help:

  • Improve sleep quality
  • Reduce anxiety and stress
  • Support hormonal balance
  • Strengthen immune function
  • Improve mood and emotional resilience
  • Reduce inflammation and chronic pain

More than just a treatment, acupuncture becomes a moment of intentional self-care — a time to pause, breathe, and reconnect with your body.

Strength in Being a Woman: Resilience and Power

There is an undeniable strength in being a woman.

Throughout history, women have overcome barriers, challenged expectations, and supported one another through times of struggle and triumph.

Strength does not always look like force or power.

Sometimes strength looks like:

  • Compassion
  • Vulnerability
  • Persistence
  • Healing
  • Community

Women lift each other up. We create spaces for healing and redefine what strength truly means.

International Women’s Day is a beautiful reminder to celebrate not only what women accomplish, but also the care, resilience, and courage that live within each of us.

A Personal Journey to Healing

For many practitioners, acupuncture is not just a profession — it is a calling shaped by personal experience.

Dr. Katrina Giangarra, DACM, Lac, Dipl OM is a licensed acupuncturist and owner of Karma Zen Acupuncture, who understands this journey firsthand.

Dr. Katrina holds a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and a Master of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine from Pacific College of Health and Science (formerly Pacific College of Oriental Medicine). She also earned a degree in biochemistry from Baylor University, bringing together both scientific and traditional perspectives in her approach to care.

Her path into acupuncture began after experiencing significant back pain. What began as a search for relief became something much deeper.

Acupuncture didn’t just help reduce her pain — it transformed her health and quality of life.

Through treatment she experienced improvements in:

  • Sleep quality
  • Immune system resilience
  • Mood and emotional balance
  • Allergy symptoms
  • Overall vitality

Those benefits inspired her to pursue formal training in this powerful medicine so she could help others experience the same healing.

Today, she is honored to support patients using a medicine that profoundly changed her life.

How Acupuncture Supports Women’s Health

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to support women through every stage of life.

Many women seek acupuncture for help with:

  • Chronic pain and musculoskeletal injuries
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Fertility support
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Digestive issues
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Immune system support

Because acupuncture works with the body’s natural regulatory systems — including the nervous system, endocrine system, and circulation — it can help restore balance rather than simply masking symptoms.

Every treatment is personalized based on the individual’s health history, symptoms, and goals.

Empowerment Through Health

True empowerment includes the ability to care for ourselves and prioritize our well-being.

When women feel healthy, supported, and balanced, they are better able to pursue their goals, care for their communities, and live fully.

This International Women’s Day, take a moment to celebrate the incredible strength and resilience of women everywhere.

But also remember something equally important:

Your health matters. Your well-being matters. And you deserve care.

Whether through acupuncture, rest, movement, or moments of quiet reflection, nurturing your health is one of the most powerful acts of self-respect you can practice.

To all the women out there:

You are powerful.
You are resilient.
You are worthy of care.

Happy International Women’s Day.
